Recreation

West Bay, Bridport, DorsetWooden Cabbage's West Dorset location is ideal for those wanting   a few days break, with excellent coastal walks on the beach or headlands just a few miles away, as well as glorious gardens to visit in the summer months, and market towns to browse.  With our local knowledge and connections we can suggest many visits "off the beaten track".

Just tell Martyn what you enjoy and he will sit with you after breakfast and help plan an itinerary giving you some great ideas of where to go and what to do.
"No unsatisfied customers - yet!"

Being in 'a designated area of outstanding natural beauty' there is no shortage of stunning countryside in which to go walking, perhaps taking in Eggardon Hill, near Powerstock, north of Bridport, or Maiden Castle outside Dorchester; and miles of quiet footpaths and bridleways meander right down to the coast, or can take you to one of the local village inns in time for lunch or dinner. Wander through our wild flower meadows in front of the house.

Painters would be spoilt for choice of subject, whether their interest is in coastal subjects, historic architecture, botany, wildlife, rivers, woodland or landscapes. There are dozens of beautiful views and vistas to inspire creative guests during their stay at Wooden Cabbage.

For those looking to learn more from their break away, why not attend one of the fantastic Specialised Pruning Courses with Jake Hobson, located just half a mile away or enjoy the cookery courses held by renowned chef, Lesley Waters at Abbotts Hill Farm which is just a quarter of a mile from Wooden Cabbage. This is her family home and cookery school, where she runs various 'hands on' or 'demonstration' days, both of which are incredibly popular and fun. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is also closeby at Axminster.

Soaking up the architecture and culture of the West Country is a favourite pastime. Visit Forde Abbey, Mapperton House and Gardens, Minterne, Montacute House, Sherborne Abbey, The Cobb at Lyme Regis, Lulworth Castle and Corfe Castle, Athelhampton House and Gardens, St Catherine's Chapel at Abbotsbury.

Gardens of particular interest include Forde Abbey, Mapperton, Minterne, the Subtropical Gardens at Abbotsbury, Athelhampton, Kingston Lacy, Stourhead, and other houses featured in Hudson's Historic Houses and Gardens Guide; as well as many local gardens in the National Gardens Scheme Yellow Book.

The beautiful Jurassic Coast is just 11 miles away, and is well known for its fossils. West Bay has a pretty harbour and stunning sandstone cliffs, with the excellent Riverside Fish Restaurant, or a delicious lunch or snack at 'Rachels' at West Bay or the Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock.  A walk up Golden Cap is not for the faint-hearted, but well worth it!

Meander through the beautiful Marshwood Vale to get to Lyme Regis, to visit The Cobb, enjoy the local harbour and shops, and perhaps lunch at  'Hix Oyster and Fish House'.

Cycling in Dorset is very popular and we have ample space at Wooden Cabbage for safe bicycle storage, while Go-Karting is available at the Clay Pigeon Raceway near Maiden Newton, and more adventurous activities at Henley Hillbillies.    Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre is within 40 minutes drive and a popular day trip

The market towns of Sherborne, Beaminster, Crewkerne and Bridport are all within 10 miles, and closeby are the thriving harbour town of Weymouth, West Bay and Lyme Regis.
